National campaign supports multicultural women navigating perimenopause and menopause
The Australian Government has launched the National Menopause and Perimenopause Awareness Campaign to improve health outcomes and experiences for women, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, as they navigate the menopause transition.
The campaign was developed in consultation with experts and communities and is informed by extensive research with a diverse group of women with lived experience. The campaign is helping women to better understand menopause-related symptoms, access evidence-based information, and feel more confident seeking care and support.
Perimenopause is the time leading up to a woman’s final period and usually starts in her 40s. Menopause is a woman’s final period, which will often happen between the ages of 45 and 55 years. A woman has reached menopause when she has not had a period for 12 months, with no other medical reason for it.
Some women will experience early menopause (before age 45) or premature ovarian insufficiency (before age 40). Some women may also reach menopause due to surgery or some cancer treatments.

Women can experience a range of symptoms that are related to hormone changes throughout the menopause transition.
- Around 2 in 4 women report mild to moderate symptoms
- Around 1 in 4 women report symptoms severe enough to affect daily activities
- Around 1 in 4 women have no symptoms.
