Open Letter to the Prime Minister of Australia

The Hon. Anthony Albanese, MP
Prime Minister of Australia
Parliament House
Canberra, ACT

Subject: Condemnation of Israel’s Violations in Lebanon

Dear Prime Minister,

I write to you with deep concern regarding the escalating situation in southern Lebanon, Beirut and the Beqaa region and the grave violations of international law committed by Israel against Lebanese sovereignty and civilians.

Since the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, Israel has consistently failed to uphold its obligations. According to reports by both the Lebanese Army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), there have been more than 4,500 violations into Lebanese territory since the ceasefire agreement—clear and repeated breaches of international commitments. These violations not only undermine the credibility of the UN system but also perpetuate instability across the region.

The most recent tragedy underscores the human cost of these actions. Today, an American Lebanese family (children and innocent civilians) was killed in Bint Jbeil in South Lebanon by Israeli drone strikes. This follows a disturbing pattern of deliberate and reckless targeting of civilians in southern Lebanon. Such attacks are indefensible and constitute violations of international humanitarian law.

Furthermore, Israel’s continued occupation of Lebanese territory—in direct defiance of Resolution 1701 and its agreements with the Lebanese government and the international community—remains an ongoing source of conflict. This illegal presence is not only a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty but also a destabilising factor for the broader Middle East.

Australia, as a nation committed to human rights, international law, and multilateral cooperation, cannot remain silent in the face of these atrocities. As Prime Minister, your leadership is urgently needed to:

  1. Publicly condemn Israel’s violations of Resolution 1701 and its ongoing incursions into Lebanese territory.

  2. Call for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Israeli forces from all occupied Lebanese land, in line with international agreements.

  3. Demand accountability at the United Nations for repeated breaches of international law and the targeting of civilians.

  4. Support diplomatic efforts for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of innocent lives in Lebanon.

  5. Advocate for an independent international investigation into the Bint Jbeil civilian killings, ensuring accountability for those responsible and justice for the victims.

Australia’s credibility as a defender of human rights depends on its willingness to apply international law fairly and consistently, regardless of political considerations. Silence in the face of civilian killings, displacement, occupation, and disregard for UN resolutions risks undermining our moral and diplomatic standing.

Prime Minister, I urge you to act with principle and clarity. The people of Lebanon—and indeed the global community—look to nations like Australia to defend justice and human dignity.

Yours sincerely,

Abraham Constantin
