Arab Council Australia Calls for the Immediate Resignation of Jillian Segal and the reconsideration of a publicly funded Antisemitism Envoy
Arab Council Australia (ACA) has consistently held the stance that the creation of a special envoy position to address antisemitism and Islamophobia are the antithesis to social cohesion. Selective responses to racism are not appropriate solutions and only serve to create further divisions in society. This position remains one that is divisive and counters any of the intentions behind it.
The appointment of Jillian Segal to a publicly funded envoy position was conducted without transparency and faced significant opposition from members of both the Jewish and broader communities. Her past role as president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry—a leading pro-Israel lobby group—should have disqualified her from such a position. Recent revelations linking her husband, notable businessman and political donor John Roth, to substantial contributions to the far-right, anti-immigrant group Advance Australia, further highlight the necessity for Segal’s immediate resignation. Segal’s overtly pro-Israel stance—especially in the context of Israel’s ongoing atrocities and acts of genocide against innocent Palestinians—has only heightened concerns among those seeking a fair and balanced approach to human rights and anti-racism efforts.
“Combating all forms of racism is vital, but it must be done through an impartial lens, particularly when addressing international conflicts and systemic injustices,” said CEO Hassan Moussa. “These revelations raise significant concerns about Ms Segal’s impartiality and indicate that social cohesion and multiculturalism are not priorities in her approach.”
Considering these detrimental impacts on social cohesion, ACA joins the growing community outrage at the lack of integrity of Jillian Segal and calls for her immediate resignation. Furthermore, ACA stresses the urgency of reconsidering the existence of a position that exacerbates societal divisions and encourages community discord.
ACA urges that the government instead allocates resources for both Special Envoy positions to the Race Discrimination Commissioner of the Australian Human Rights Commission, to genuinely combat racism and promote a fair and inclusive multicultural Australian society.
