Important travel advice for Australians travelling during the month of Ramadan

As Ramadan approaches, many members of the Arab community are preparing to spend the month or the Eid al-Fitr holiday outside Australia, whether to visit family or friends.

During periods of planning and preparation, some travellers may not give sufficient attention to checking travel advice. However, following official travel guidance is an essential step that helps enhance safety and confidence while travelling.

In this context, we are providing a set of essential travel information to help travellers better prepare for their upcoming journeys. This information is based on guidance from Smartraveller, the Australian Government’s official and free travel advice service.

Important reminders for travellers:

This year, Ramadan coincides with the Lunar New Year, which may result in increased congestion at airports and a higher likelihood of flight delays during this period.

When travelling to Muslim-majority countries during Ramadan, travellers are advised to be aware that eating or drinking in public during fasting hours may be illegal in some destinations, or socially unacceptable even where it is legally permitted.

Even when travelling to a destination that has been visited before, or when staying with family or relatives, travellers are strongly encouraged to review travel advice and obtain appropriate travel insurance. Travel insurance can provide support in cases of trip cancellations, delays, lost luggage, as well as major emergencies such as natural disasters or pandemics.

Travellers holding dual citizenship are advised to familiarise themselves in advance with any restrictions or procedures related to their other nationality, as this may affect the type and timing of consular assistance the Australian Government can provide overseas. In the event of an emergency, travellers should first contact local authorities.

Permanent residents travelling with family members who hold Australian citizenship should also check whether entry requirements, visa conditions, or travel regulations differ between individuals.
